Getting perfect looking skin is easy with a little know-how. The right products applied with the right tools in the right order will give you a flawless complexion.
Foundation is not meant to be a mask. It should be worn to even out skin tone and enhance what nature gave you. For the best finish, prep your complexion with moisturizer and primer, apply concealer where necessary followed by foundation and finish with translucent powder for staying power.
- Moisturize: On clean skin, apply a thin layer of a lightweight moisturizer and allow it to be absorbed. Avoid using a heavy cream or anything super emollient that feels greasy to the touch. After a few minutes, drape a tissue over your face and gently press to absorb excess.
- Primer: A primer helps seal in moisturizer and smooth your complexion making whatever is applied afterwards look better and last longer. Apply a small amount (pea- sized) to the center of your face and work outward, blending well. Wait a minute or so until it's completely absorbed before applying concealer and foundation.
- Concealer: To hide dark undereye circles, opt for one shade lighter than your foundation. It will cover what you need and subtly brighten the eye area. Creamy formulas are best for under eyes but if you have very dark circles, choose a slightly drier consistency for more coverage. If you're looking to cover a blemish, use the concealer after applying foundation. The concealer needs to be an exact match to your complexion or it will stand out and do the opposite of what you're trying to accomplish. Apply coverage with a pointed concealer brush for the most precision and gently blend being careful not to remove coverage.
- Foundation: Only buy foundation that you can try on before purchasing or return to the store if it doesn't work once you get it home. To test the shade apply a swatch of color near your jawline and look at it outside in daylight. Never test by swiping on your arm or the back of your hand since they're not the same color as your face. The right shade will virtually disappear into your complexion. If you can still see it, it's not the right shade. Apply using your fingers, a foundation brush or a sponge. Start at the center of your face and blend outward.
- Blush: Blush brightens your complexion and helps you recapture a healthy glow. Choose a shade that mimics what nature does naturally--the color you turn after a brisk walk or when your cheeks get flushed because you're embarrassed. Apply to the apples of your cheeks and blend in a circular motion. Powder blush can be applied after translucent powder but use cream or gel blush before you powder.
- Powder: Powder helps set your makeup and keep it in place for the day. For the sheerest finish, use a powder brush with loose powder. Dip your brush into the powder and tap it on the side of the container to remove excess and pick up the exact amount you'll need. Gently sweep over entire face. For more coverage, use a puff or round sponge and press powder into place.

Cherrine Banks :
Hi Nancy,
I do not wear foundation (mostly lipstick and
mascara). However, I enjoyed how detailed your instructions are for the
beginner or as a refresher for more experience foundation wearers.
Enjoy your evening.
