This season make-up is all about glamor. As couture becomes a little more austere, looking for the pieces which provide timeless quality and beauty, the fun comes from make-up. Buying a few new shades or trying a new make-up look is definitely much cheaper for credit crunch times than updating a whole wardrobe whether buying from designers or the high street.
Make-up will change any look, especially for the party season, but can also add a feeling of luxury, role play or simply fun.
Red Lips: These have been in and out of fashion over the last couple of years but the momentum has really built up and this is definitely the color of the moment. For a simple chic look, try using a really matte red rather than anything too glossy, and team it with a polished skin and neutral but defined eyes. This season, few are doing it better than Laura Mercier; try the lip velvet or range of creamy lip colors. For a black and white film take on red lips look out for black lip color from Mac soon to be hitting the shops; this is perfect for twenties and party make-up.
Lashes: Dramatic lashes have been done so well in Japan for a long time that it is hardly surprising that Shu Uemura excel in this field. Soon to be hitting the UK will be an extension of their lash bars in Space NK stores. Lashes for this season are opulent, beautiful and sculptural in their own right. The look is about high fashion; about creating beauty and fantasy. Nervous folks can try individual lashes but the season's emphasis is on something chic and couture rather than Wag so look for lashes which hold a make-up together by themselves. Good quality lashes usually start at around £15 and are re-usable so these are a brilliant way to update a party outfit cheaply. This season make it feathers, color, jewels or anything that makes a statement.
Nude Lips: Nude lips this season are a fashion look; they are high drama, stark and done with confidence. Forget the sheer beige roses and get out the concealer pencils, or better still try Mac for a great range of true nudes.
Opulence: With fashion being all about good quality and expensive looking investment pieces, make up picks up on the luxury but with the idea of fun. For the party season, try Mac's pro chunky glitter or Laura Mercier's new limited edition sparkly eye shades with a high shine.
Eye Liner: Lining the under eyes is big news for the new Autumn season. the look is a little smoky but not the soft, extended smoky eye that we have been used to for a few years. Keep the color close to the lash line and keep it intense, only softening it to a smoky look at the edges if strictly necessary. This look is all about eye liner and definition. Kohl pencils and gel liners are the best tools to create this look; try Mac and Shu Uemura.
'80s Brights: This is the young, fun and less opulent trend that came off the catwalks this autumn. Vibrant and distinctive, it is easy to play around with neon brights on eyes, lips, cheeks or nails. It is the perfect complement to all the Eighties style clothing that most of the high street stores have taken up and also brightens up an otherwise very serious and adult season. For all ages, this look can be fresh and bold and is a fun stand against recession blues as it looks neither thrifty nor classic. Older or more serious people who like the classic tailoring and return to quality that has been seen recently could update an outfit with a splash of neon nail color such as Essie's brights. Mac, Nars and Barry M provide accessible eye and cheek color for all and teens should throw away their lip gloss in favor of classy matte brights such as Nars Schiap.
Flawless Coverage: Foundation has made a big comeback. Make-up has changed since the first tinted moisturizers became vogue in the Nineties. Now, full coverage and perfect skin can feel as light and natural as a tinted moisturizer on the skin and with the bright lips and heavy eyes of this season, nothing will look better than a properly prepared canvass. Always choose the correct, matching skin tone colour and the foundation need not look orange and caked. Great products include Laura Mercier Silk Creme and Nars.
Whichever trends or new products appeal, the look of the season is bold, clean and confident. The made-up look has definitely made a come back.
