Nothing says glamour like the classic look of smoky eyes. Celebrity stylists have been using this dramatic makeup technique for years, and now anyone can.

Get the look that celebrities have worn for years. In just a few simple steps, anyone can create the same stunning smoky-eyed look that is highlighted in almost every fashion magazine.

  1. After moisturizing, apply foundation to the lid and eye area. This provides a smooth base for the eye shadow and liner that will be applied later, prevents eye color from melting away, and helps keep eyes bright and striking all day long.
  2. Select an eye shadow that is one or two shades darker than your skin tone. For fair skin, try a champagne shade. Medium and darker tones can use a bronze color. Using a professional eye shadow brush, gently glide the eye shadow from the lashes up onto the eyelid. Be careful not to apply any shadow above the crease.
  3. Apply a darker eye shadow in shades such as gray or charcoal. Rich violets or blues can also be used to create a more daring look. As before, simply sweep the color over the eyelid, but this time, stop before reaching the crease.
  4. Apply mascara. For an extremely sultry look, gently apply the first coat to each eyelash, and allow the mascara to dry. As the second coat is applied, wiggle the wand slowly as it is combed through the lashes. This action helps to extend lashes and create volume.
  5. Line eyes with a black or dark gray pencil (kohl pencils work well for this). For the top lash, start with a thin line at the eye's inner corner, and gradually thicken the line toward the center of the eyelid.
  6. Using the darkest eye shadow - usually a shade of black - smudge the eye shadow across the eyeliner (a Q-tip works well). Continue to smudge the shadow out and around the entire eye, leaving only the inner corner untouched.

Tips

  • When applying the eye shadow in step 2, the color should be visible regardless of whether the eyes or opened or closed.
  • A nude or very light shade of lipstick works best with smoky eyes.
  • Don't over-apply foundation or blush. Too much facial makeup can be overwhelming when worn with such dramatic eye makeup.
  • Make sure to use different shades of eye shadow. Too much black color can lead to a scary, "mask-like" look.
  • Be sure to blend - this is the secret to creating a sophisticated look without looking too "made-up."

Now step back and take a look at those gorgeous smoky eyes! Time to go out and show them off!
