Looking to master a popular make-up technique- the natural-looking lip? Here is a quick guide to natural lips that work for you, not against you.

The natural make-up look is a make-up trend that is always in style, and the natural-looking lip is a sought after make-up technique that can be tough to achieve. It requires your lips be in great condition and if you aren't careful, your lovely lips can disappear into your face. Here is a guide to creating a perfect dewy pout that pops.

How to Prepare Your Lips

It is essential your lips are hydrated and as smooth as possible in order to have soft colours slide over your perfect pout. Moisturize your lips every night liberally with a rich lip treatment, and then exfoliate them gently every morning by brushing in small circles with a soft toothbrush.

Boots No 7 Deeply Moisturizing Lipcare is good choice to replenish the moisture your lips have lost in the dehydrating winter season. Vaseline petroleum jelly works just fine too; in fact, the rich mineral oils it contains seals in moisture.

How to Choose the Right Lip Colour

A very simple way to find the right natural shade for your skin tone is to take a look at your favourite lip colour, and then pick one several shades lighter. Natural lips don’t equal invisible lips. What you are trying to achieve is a fresh look, and there are plenty of light pinky, rosy and peachy shades to suit every skin tone. We are all drawn to certain colours that are our favourites, and there is no reason to approach choosing a natural lip colour any differently. Try on what you are naturally drawn to. You probably have lipstick colours in your make-up bag that will work great.

Some popular go-to choices for a fresh, nude look include MAC Cosmetics tinted Lipglass C-Thru or Spite, combined with MAC's peachy lipstick Myth. This is a combo that works well for a variety of skin tones. A great basic lipliner to always have in your cosmetic case is Annabelle’s Spice liner. It slides on like silk for under five bucks, and will work well with several different shades if you like to experiment.

The Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lip Colors line has several shades which work well for this look, including nude shades like 'nearly there' and "caramel kiss" from the Naturals range.

How to Apply Your Colour to Get the Natural Look

Skip the oft-suggested step of applying foundation over your lips first. You want your pout to pop, not disappear. But don’t skip the step of lining. Particularly for a softer lip, lining is important because it gives your lips definition from the rest of your face and complements your chosen colour. Apply a few dots of lipgloss in a colour close to your lipstick choice. Apply your lipstick over your gloss to give you a glowing look that isn’t too wet and sticky looking.

Products to Try

If you have trouble working the lipstick over the gloss, try using a lipbrush for application. Maybelline’s Expert Tools lip brush and Sephora's Square Retractable lip brush #60 are good choices. The advantage of using a lipbrush is that it applies the colour precisely and evenly. It’s frugal too- you will use less product and as you reach the end of the tube, you can access every last bit of colour.

Press your lips together and you are ready to go with a perfect dewy pout that looks like you are about to head down the runway.
