Red lipstick is a classic colour that any woman can wear. You just need to find the right shade for your skin tone and learn how to apply it properly.
The late great Isabella Blow once said, "If you don't wear lipstick, I can't talk to you." And nothing can capture the attention of the person you are talking to like a pair of great red lips - just ask Man Ray.
Bold red lips conjure up the idea of Hollywood screen sirens like Marilyn Monroe and Jean Harlow. Red lips have staying power. They are timeless and classic. Trends come and go, but a beautiful red mouth will always be in style.
However, a lot of women shy away from red! They think it is too dramatic and difficult to wear, but really anyone can wear red lipstick. It's as easy as one, two, three.
- The Right Red: There is a red lipstick out there for every woman; you just need to find the right tone. If you have fair skin, choose a red with a cool or blue undertone. Warm olive skin look best in a warm red to match - try one with an orange or gold tone. Women with dark skin look amazing in a bright fuchsia-like red.
- The Right Application: Lips need to be smooth and flake-free in order to pull off a red mouth. To remove dead skin from lips, lightly buff them with a damp washcloth. Next apply a thin layer of moisturizer and blot lips. Lip balms can be too heavy and prevent lipstick from adhering. Try Clinique's Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. It's lightweight and absorbs into the lips easily. Now it's time for lip liner. Make sure it matches you lipstick exactly. Line your lips within your natural lip line. Don't try to make your lips look fuller by going outside the line - it very rarely (if at all) looks good. Next, apply a thin layer of lipstick and then with a lip brush, blend the lipstick into the lip liner so there are no hard edges.
- The Right Attitude: Now you're ready to rock your bold, red lips. Wear them with jeans and a t-shirt or a cocktail dress; a beautiful red mouth never looks out of place. Just make sure that when you wear red lips, the rest of your make up is soft - lightly defined brows, a dusting of shimmery nude eye shadow, a layer of mascara, and a soft blush that complements your skin tone. When you have a perfect red pout, you don't want anything else to distract from it.
