Women who are diagnosed with cancer will endure different types of treatments that can cause changes in the skin and the appearance. Cosmetics and skin care can help

Women who are diagnosed with cancer may face treatments ranging from surgery to chemotherapy or radiation. Chemotherapy in particular is usually very drying for the skin. since it can remove the natural oil. Since skin type changes there will be a need to change the current skin care program and cosmetics that are currently being used.

Skin Care for Cancer Survivors

Now that the skin is dryer because of the chemotherapy treatments there will be a need to replace the moisture that is now lost. First start by applying a gentle mask to the face, neck and decollate. Gently massage the skin to slough off any dead skin. This will automatically help relieve dry skin. Once washed, apply a deep hydrating moisturizer. Most night creams are considered a deep hydrating formula. Depending on the severity of the dry skin it may be necessary to use a night cream for day use. At least until skin begins to replenish the moisture.

Lips will also be dryer so apply a lip mask or a thin layer of Vaseline and slough off the dead skin gently with an extra toothbrush.

Cosmetics for Cancer Survivors

Because hair is usually lost during cancer treatments, there will be a need to update the beauty regimine.

  • First start with foundation and concealer; a yellow based concealer will help cover dark areas under the eyes. A foundation that is closest to the skin tone will give the most natural look. Due to dry skin, switching to a liquid or cream foundation will be beneficial. Not only will continue to help hydrate the skin but it will not stick in any fine lines or wrinkles nor will it show dry skin patches if that is a problem.
  • If hair is lost, most likely eyebrows will be lost or sparse. Using an eyebrow pencil, light brown seems to work for a majority of people, apply with feather like strokes. Brush the eyebrows with an eyebrow brush to blend. If there are no eyebrows, use two shades of eyebrow pencils, one the natural color and one a shade lighter.
  • For eye colors, stick with natural colors in shades of browns and vanilla. These shades will help keep an uniform look as well as helping the eye color to pop out more.
  • Eyelashes may also be sparse due to the treatments as well, to help the lashline look fuller, use a dark brown or black eye shadow and a short straight makeup brush to push the color into the base of the lashes. Then apply mascara.
  • Lips could also be dry like the rest of the skin so it will probably be a good time to stick with lip gloss. Lip gloss will help keep lips hydrated but will also add some shimmer to brighten the look.
