Despite petty denials, the '80s look is constantly showing up in the media. It is a timeless bold fashion that is sure to pop up every now and again.

This is a guide to achieving the '80s retro make-up look. Though, it is not a traditional 80's style, more a contemporary spin on the rad look of the '80s. These directions, however, are only a guideline as the look can be taken to crazy "new wave" heights or softened at the discretion of the individual.

A Glance Back at '80s Make-Up

Tools and Make-Up Needed for The Look

  • Brightly colored eye shadows (greens, blues, purples, black, white, pinks...)
  • Eye shadow applicators/brushes
  • Black eye liner pencil
  • Black liquid eye liner
  • Mascara

How To Achieve Great '80s Make-Up

  1. As with any look, a good foundation is necessary. Whether a basic foundation and concealor or a flawless complexion, make sure to apply a necessary foundation before getting crazy with the '80s goodness.
  2. The eyes are the most essential component to the '80s retro look, to achieved desired 80's wackiness, make sure to have at least four or five different colors available. Always include a black and white in the mix... the other two or three colors are at the discretion of the wearer. For this example bright green, vibrant blue and purple will be used.
  3. Start with the highlight. Use an applicator to cover the upper lid and the section just over the eye with a bright white color; this will make the eyes pop.
  4. Once the highlight has been applied, it will be time to start with the bright colors. Choose one of the selected colors; for this example it will be the green. Apply to the right corner of the right eye lid and let the color extend a tiny bit above the crease and to about the middle of the lid.
  5. Using the same color, apply to the right corner of the left eye lid. Try not to go above the crease with this eye, but extend the color to about the middle of the eye lid as well.
  6. Next, choose an additional bright color; for this example purple will be used. Apply the purple color to the center of the lids of both eyes, letting it extend a tiny bit above the crease and overlapping it a tiny bit with the green color.
  7. Third, use the last bright color – for this example it's blue – and apply to the inner corner of the right eye, just as the green was applied to the left eye and to the outer corner of the left eye as the green was applied to the outer corner of the right eye.
  8. This should create a rainbow effect. If the colors are too vibrant or disjointed, blend the edges with a finger or brush.
  9. This look is slightly asymmetrical. So choose one eye and line the bottom rim with the white and go over it slightly with the purple. Line the rim of the other eye with a nice helping of the bright blue.
  10. Once the eye shadow is on, get out the black pencil and line the inner rims of both eyes.
  11. Next, take the liquid eyeliner. On the eye with the purple and white underneath, draw a nice line with the black liquid eyeliner on the bottom lid. On the eye with the blue on the bottom draw a nice line with the black liquid eyeliner on the top lid.
  12. Finish off the eyes with a nice hearty helping of mascara.

This completes the great '80s eyes. To play it up a bit, take a colored liquid eye liner and draw some stars around the eye in the temple area or add some glitter to the look to make the eyes really pop. Have fun, play it up or play it down. They eyes are an excellent canvas for painting.
